  1. We value your contribution to CT Management Group; what drew you to becoming a consultant?
I had worked in civil design and the emergency services. Later I joined local government. While in local government, CT Management helped out with experienced officers when we had talent gaps.
Year later when I was self employed, I felt comfortable touching base with CT Management, to see if there were opportunities to work together.
  2. What is your specialist area, and why are you interested in that field?
I’m a generalist and have worked in different sectors and in a range or roles. While my background was originally engineering and science (fire), I developed an interest in working with smaller communities – both rural and remote. So, whatever my role, I always look for opportunities to make a positive difference and become personally involved in the local community.
  3. What has been your career highlight to date?
Lots of rewarding things over the course of my career. A few include fining a way to prevent rheumatic heart disease in remote indigenous communities on the Tiwi Islands by partnering with the local doctors and setting up a salt chlorinated pool This had the positive effect of reducing scabies infections, and thus reducing chronic secondary infections including RHD in children.
  4. What was the last thing you read – was it a report, novel or newspaper?
I read fairly widely. Mostly novels as a change from the work and technical reading at work. Most recently I revisited the Terry Pratchett series of Diskworld books.
  5. How do you relax- is it music, meditation or something else?
This has changed over the years. These days relaxation involves coming home at night rather than working interstate. Working in the garden, walking the dog, having a red wine with my wife.
  6. When you are away from work, what do you like doing?
Visiting friends, coffee at the local café at the Olive Pink Gardens in Alice Springs, and more recently wood carving.
  7. Are you a sportsperson or a spectator, and what’s the sport?
I’m not a sports person. More like an amateur commentator.
  8. Is there something you’d like to tell us about yourself that you think would surprise us?
I had a number of interesting roles in the emergency services. One was as a preliminary arson and fatality investigator with CFA Victoria. Without going into too much detail, it put a different perspective on forensic and crime shows.
  9. In a world with so many leaders and achievers – is there one person that gives you inspiration, why?
There are very few public figures who impress me these days. Probably because we largely hear about the problems and issues with our leaders. I feel the best leader by a long stretch and for a long tome has been Barrack Obama. While none of us agree with all of any leader decisions, Barrack conducted himself in a respectful manner.

We thank Mark for sharing his story with us and wish him a long and happy career as an Associate.
